  I’ll tell you this: If I am ever on a chase… it will be for wild GEESE (plural). I’ll not go on a chase for one wild goose. Higher expectations … get more geese …Yesterday, I saw a flock of geese flying in formation and heading northwest … honking encouragement at their leader goose … We all make mistakes when we were young … and for the record, I was young last night …I tell myself often … Words in my head … You know how sometimes you get a song in your head and it won’t go away. I have that same phenomena with words. The little voice in my head is really like that cartoon character who could blow holes into a mountain saying, “Kaboom” … Ugly as homemade sin. A drip. A drop. Lights Out in June 2024 ...

  So, this happened. I did something good for all the bad reasons. No, maybe I did something bad for all the right reasons. Yeah, that’s the ticket. A couple of Mondays ago … I cleaned out the freezers. Threw away anything which was frost bitten … which was just about everything. But, I got snake bit ridding us of the frost bitten … I put out FIVE trash cans for the Tuesday ‘solid waste’ pickup. I always put the maximum amount out for the trash day … I feel like I get ‘gypped’ if I don’t … like I don’t get my money’s worth unless I’ve rounded up a lot of trash… kitty commode scoops always top off the garbage take out … So, Monday night … huge storm. Rain, hail, lightning that was so lightening that the darkness-activated landscape lights were blinking … no idea if night had turned into day. The wind was hellish … And … all sprinkler systems came on despite their moisture detection gauges which are supposed to block all high cost waterings … And five trash cans (bins…to use a...

While there is no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, here are some good ground rules.  #1 Grief belongs to the griever. You have a supporting role, not the central role, in your friend's grief. This may seem like a strange thing to say. So many of the suggestions, advice and "help" given to the griever tells them they should be doing this differently, or feeling differently than they do. Grief is a very personal experience, and belongs entirely to the person experiencing it. You may believe you would do things differently if it had happened to you. We hope you do not get the chance to find out. This grief belongs to your friend: follow his or her lead.  #2 Stay present and state the truth. It's tempting to make statements about the past or the future when your friend's present life holds so much pain.
